As the god of learning, of writing, and of books, Quetzalcóatl was particularly venerated in the calmecac, religious colleges annexed to the temples, in which the future priests and the sons of the nobility were educated. |
The children of both pipiltin and tecuhtli could enroll in the religious college, or calmecac, where they could be trained as priests or political administrators. |
Also located nearby was the cuicalli, or house of the songs, and the calmecac. |
The calmecac apparently was also open to certain other commoners, such as wealthy and influential merchants and craftsmen. |
