Nonostante questi fosse in uggia al cugino Leopardi, che ne celebrò ironicamente «le magnifiche sorti e progressive», né fosse gradito al Mazzini, Carducci lo aveva sempre tenuto in grande stima, tanto da includerlo nel ristretto gruppo dei sei dedicatari delle Rime del 1857, al cui interno vi erano per Mamiani una dedica e un sonetto.
