At the heart of the Collection are the first and early editions of Talmud, codes of law, responsa, legal and biblical commentaries and mystical texts.
The author of this collection of responsa was a member of a Tunisian family of scholars, most of whose works were published in Leghorn.
A number of the early editions of the codes and more interesting editions of responsa, of the hundreds held in the Lowy collection, are displayed here and throughout the exhibition.
In turn, these responsa were synthesized into rules, and maxims became the pithy expression, often expressed as proverbs, of these rules.
The codes and responsa provide a wealth of historical and linguistic documentation beyond their purely legal significance.
