Most of basidiomycetes are characterized by the large sporophore on which the basidia with its basidiospores are borne.
The basidia are abruptly club-shaped, rather distant and separated regularly by rounded cells, four spored.
Then there will be either lamellae, or gills, or pores, with hymenial layers bearing the basidia.
They resemble each other very much, except that the basidia bear four sterigmata and a spore on each.
At the microscopic level the basidiospores are shot off basidia and then fall between the gills in the dead air space.
In the young stage the basidia in the Hypogi are easily distinguished by the aid of the microscope.
